Abstract:

There is a large number of sub-modules in modular multilevel converters (MMC).It make the complexity and costs of MMC much high, and the traditional CAN communication or RS 485 communication cannot meet the good performance of real-time transmission and high reliability between sub-modules for its slow transmission rate, low reliability and poor signal synchronization. In the paper, the real-time Ethernet technology is introduced and a MMC control system scheme is designed based on EtherCAT. Compared to the traditional hierarchical control scheme, this scheme simplifies the control structure with only the master controller and the slave controller, and it greatly improves the transmission rate and reliability between master station and slave station. At the same time, it can accurately control the carrier signal synchronization. Three-phase modular multilevel converter experimental platform is built based on the strategy. The validity of proposed controller architecture is verified by experimental results.
